The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, has called on journalists to maintain professionalism in their work, particularly in an age where social media has enabled anyone with a smartphone to act as a journalist.
The Governor made the appeal through his Deputy, Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim, at the International Convention Centre, Awka, during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council Press Week.

The event was organized by the association to honour distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to the state.

Describing the ceremony as “wonderful,” the Deputy Governor expressed appreciation for the presence of stakeholders, commending the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Dr. Emeka Odogwu Emeka PhD, for his leadership. He urged journalists to stay committed to ethical standards despite the growing influence of unr@gulated online content.

"In an era where everyone with a phone and internet access claims to be a journalist, professionalism must remain your watchword. The public can tell the difference, and it's our duty to uphold that trust," he stated.

Dr. Ibezim also congratulated the NUJ’s "Man of the Year" award recipient, Engr. Okey Ezeobi, and other honourees. He lauded the NUJ for recognizing integrity and hard work, while also acknowledging past awardees for their continued impact.

In his acceptance speech, Engr. Ezeobi dedicated the award to God and pledged his support to the NUJ in achieving greater heights. He called on both current and former recipients to work together to advance journalism and contribute meaningfully to the development of Anambra State.
"I intend to use this platform to make a lasting impact, not only in my community Nanka but across the entire state," he said.

Meanwhile, Comrade Aloy Emeka Attah of Sun newspaper and the winner of the Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna Award for Ethical Reportage, expressed gratitude to the NUJ for the recognition. He noted that this was the second consecutive year he had received the honour and described it as motivation to do even more.
The event was marked by vibrant cultural displays, the attendance of top government officials, members of the traditional institution and a large turnout of journalists, all of which contributed to the colourful atmosphere of the celebration.
