2025 FLOOD RISK: SOLUDO URGES PROACTIVE ACTION AS NEMA VISITS ANAMBRA

As part of efforts to mitigate the effects of the anticipated 2025 flood season in Anambra State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) today, june 4, 2025 visited Anambra State to launch a sensitization campaign targeting residents of flood-prone areas.
The NEMA delegation paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of Anambra State at the Light House, Awka, where they were received by the Deputy Governor Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim, on behalf of the state Governor Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR.
Speaking during the visit, the Dr. Ibezim emphasized that addressing the flooding challenge remains a top priority for the Soludo administration. He highlighted the state's multi-sectoral approach to flood management, which he added that the deliberate construction and decongestion of waterways across Anambra is an enabler in averting flooding.
“The time to act is now,” Dr. Ibezim stated, describing NEMA’s visit as timely and critical. He called for increased collaboration between federal and state agencies as he led a minute silence in honour of victims of recent flooding in Niger State.
In his address, the team leader and representative of the NEMA Director-General, Dr. Godwin Thickman explained that the agency was in Anambra to engage stakeholders and raise awareness on flood preparedness. He described flooding as a recurring national menace and stressed the importance of community-level responsiveness.
“Efforts have been made to reduce the impact of floods this year. We urge residents to heed early warning signs and support mitigation measures,” he said.
Also present at the meeting were the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor . Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu a representative of the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike; South East Zonal Head of SEMA, Mrs. Ngozi Echeazu; Executive Secretary of Anambra SEMA, Chief Paul Odenigbo; and Executive Director, Hon. Cyprian Agupugo, Deputy Chief of Protocol to the Governor ( Office of the Deputy Governor), Mr. Emmanuel Obieze , Permanent Secretary, Office of the Deputy Governor Dr. Florence Idigo-Ibenta, among others.
The visit , a description of a positive step in the nationwide flood sensitization campaign led by NEMA, aimed at minimizing the loss of lives and property through early preparedness and public engagement.
