ANAMBRA DEPUTY GOVERNOR URGES FLOOD VICTIMS TO EVACUATE AHEAD OF 2024 FLOOD SEASON
The Anambra state Deputy Governor and Chairman, Flood Response Committee, Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim, has called on residents living in flood-risk areas to vacate their homes in anticipation of the 2024 flood season.
This he said during a meeting held in his office at the Government House in Awka, Dr. Ibezim expressed concern over the removal of essential items from various holding camps by flood victims, emphasizing that these items could be utilized during subsequent emergencies instead of being replaced annually.

He decried the construction of houses in flood-prone areas, highlighting the risks to human life during flooding.

The Transition Committee Chairmen from Awka North, Anambra East, Anambra West, Idemili South, and Ayamelum local government areas assured the committee of their readiness to provide holding centers for flood-affected victims and requested government support when needed.
Dr. Ibezim commended their efforts, particularly thanking the Anambra East TC Chairman for clearing and fumigating his centers .

The meeting resolved to:

- Ensure the presence of OCHA brigade in holding centers to maintain order
- Provide games and training in centers to keep evacuees engaged
- Encourage evacuation by road instead of water to minimize casualties and loss of life
 - Grouping of victims in centers for ease of personal identification.

The Deputy Governor's call to action is to mitigate the impact of the impending flood season in the lives and  properties of ndi Anambra.
