FLOOD WARNING: 11 LGAs IN ANAMBRA AT HIGH RISK - NEMA DG

-AS SOLUDO FLAGS OFF THE AWARENESS PROGRAMME IN AWKA 

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned that 11 Local Government Areas in Anambra State are at high and moderate flood risk . The affected LGAs are Ogbaru, Anambra East, Anambra West, Ayamelum, Idemili North, Onitsha North, Nnewi North, Idemili South, Onitsha South, Ihiala, and Ekwusigo.
NEMA Director General, Zubaida Umar, made this disclosure in Awka, during the 2024 downscaling of flood early warning strategies for Anambra State. She stated that the agency has identified the LGAs as flood risk areas, based on the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) and Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

In his speech, Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, represented by his Deputy, Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim, commended NEMA for their support and assured that the state government has developed a work plan to mitigate the impact of flooding in the state.
"We thank NEMA for picking Anambra state for the flag-off of this year's flood early warning sensitisation," Soludo said. "On the short term, the state government has commenced infrastructural interventions such as expansion and desilting of drains as well as terminating drains into the streams. The state government is prepared for the emergencies and ready to work with NEMA to reduce the impacts of the annually recurring floods to safeguard the lives and property of ndi Anambra."
The Governor emphasized the need for community participation in disaster management, stating that "disaster management is everyone's business." He urged traditional institutions, faith-based organizations, public and private institutions, and relevant stakeholders to support NEMA in disseminating flood early warning and mitigation messages to the grassroots.

Executive secretary SEMA Anambra Chief PaulOdenigbo. Executive director SEMA Anambra Hon. Cyprain Agupugo. Traditional rulers from various communities, leaders of religious groups, civil society groups amongst others.
