ANAMBRA STATE HOSTS EASTERN REGIONAL PEACE WORKSHOP
Today, the International Convention Centre in Awka played host to the Concord Initiative South East Zonal Technical Workshop, themed "Sustainable Peace, Inclusive Recovery, and Durable Security".
Declaring the event open, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo (CFR) described peace as a virtue that goes beyond the absence of war. Represented by his Deputy, Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim, the Governor emphasized the strategic importance of Anambra State as the gateway to the eastern region, making it a crucial hub for peace initiatives to emanate from and spread to other states. He reiterated the state's commitment to peacekeeping, stressing that what affects one town affects the entire state and region.
Dr. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives,in his address, called for regional coexistence and emphasized the imperative need for peace. The Deputy Speaker represented by Dr. Joseph Ochuogwu commended Governor Soludo for establishing the Truth, Justice, and Peace Commission, he stated it is a significant step towards achieving peace. The Deputy Speaker expressed happiness over the peace initiatives in the region and urged political and religious leaders to champion peace in their various domains.
Other notable attendees included Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, National Vice President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. Chief Titus Akpudo, National President of Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU). Hon. Justice Chika Ifemeje, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Anambra State. Representatives from correctional services, the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, regional states, civil society organizations, and members of the press.
The two-day workshop, organized by the Office for Strategic Preparedness and Resilience (National Early Warning Centre of Nigeria) in collaboration with the Anambra State Government, aims to promote sustainable peace, inclusive recovery, and durable security in the Eastern region. This workshop began today, May 16, and is expected to conclude tomorrow, May 17, 2024, according to the director in charge Mr. Chris Nwolu.
